Decoy wallet

The long-term fund still needs two of the three plates. This page is only about the plate you keep at home.

Without the passphrase, it is the decoy

The 24 words alone open one wallet. Leave a little bitcoin there. A thief who takes only that plate and loads the words sees that balance and may stop.

With the passphrase, it is the spending wallet

The same words plus a passphrase open a different wallet. Use that one for daily or monthly spending, and keep only a modest amount in it. The passphrase is not a password on an app. A typo opens an empty wallet that looks real. If the passphrase is lost, that spending wallet is gone.

Write the passphrase down. Do not stamp it on the plate. Do not keep it in the same drawer as the plate.

What this does not do

Those words are still one real key of the long-term fund. The decoy does not hide that from someone who knows to look for a multisig. It is for the thief who only opens a normal wallet.

Do not put a passphrase on the 2-of-3 itself. This kit builds that fund with an empty passphrase, so any two plates work without a 25th word. The decoy and the spending wallet are the home seed alone.
